Tikanga for Awa
VISION MATAURANGA FUND
Developed from an action point in the Oromahoe Waitangi Kāinga Climate Adaptation Plan (Project Kāinga), Tikanga for Awa supports Ngāti Rāhiri and Ngāti Kawa to exercise kaitiakitanga over the Waitangi catchment. Drawing on the limits set in the Whakaoratia te Wai Māori Awa Plan, the four-stage tikanga helps hapū compile data, monitor gaps, translate their aspirations into national freshwater standards, and advocate with Northland Regional Council. The work is delivered alongside Ko Waitangi te Awa Trust, which has adopted the Awa Plan to guide its monitoring, advocacy and wetland protection.
Research team: Russell Death, Fiona Death, Tom Kay, Hirini Tane.
