A Question of Identity
MARSDEN|ROYAL SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND
A question of identity: how connected are Maori youth to ancestral marae, and does it matter? With this question, the project aims to investigate difficult issues about marae connection and identity. This 3 year project is a follow to the Te Wehi Nui project, engaging in discussions Māori youth and their source communities to broaden understandings of marae amd transformations of ‘community’ occurring both at home and overseas. Findings will offer leading insights from New Zealand and contribute to discussions on similar issues facing indigenous peoples internationally regarding home connection and identity.
Here is the link to our kura resources website. It contains our observations of trends, problems and positive strategies related to Rangatahi, Marae and connectivity that our 'Eight Kura cohort' shared with us in our research. Hopefully the information will be useful for all kura across Aotearoa New Zealand.
